Brooklyn Bridge was painted at perhaps the height of Howell’s fame. Not only does the impressionistic brushwork and palette give rise to a more ambitious and technically difficult composition, it also establishes a more contemplative mood. The bright sunlight flattens the Manhattan skyline into a warm colorful mosaic that complements the cool violet shadows of the bridge. The tugboat is a reminder of the non-stop port activity that, at the time, was the quintessential New York scene.
