In this spectacular work Herzog captures the Romantic imagery associated with the nineteenth-century notion of Manifest Destiny: the privilege and responsibility for America’s Western expansion. Paintings like Twilight offered idealized, Arcadian scenes imbued with a sense of divine wonder and future promise. Herzog’s interest in painting the effects of illumination on the landscape was well suited to this kind of art, and here in this large-scale work he provides an expansive golden vista beyond the herd of elk—an exotic beast for east coast audiences—gathering for a sunset drink.
