View of Fordham reveals Johnson at his best, showing the Luminist style that made his work so well-received with contemporary audiences. His precise technique becomes poetic with the dramatically charged atmosphere of bright, billowing clouds and dense, shady trees. Curator Gwendolyn Owens observed that:

Johnson’s method of painting had evolved into tight, controlled technique by the 1870s. Using a fine brush and minute, almost invisible strokes, he created delicately detailed compositions that are among his finest paintings. The superb handling, richness of color, and realistic effect of those works…make them exquisite examples of the style that is called Luminism.
