In Sunset, we see a wonderful example of Crane's ability to paint light with brilliantly intermingled branches silhouetted against a rose and orange-hued horizon. The figures offer an effective anchor to the smooth, salmon-tinted sheen reflections of the frozen pond. These qualities would place Sunset in Crane’s earlier career when he was more concerned with the formal and romantic aesthetic of the Hudson River School. These earlier paintings by Crane are considered to be the more sought after of his works because of these Hudson River School elements - the reverence for America's natural beauty and, in particular, the breathtaking depiction of landscape as a pastoral setting where human beings and nature coexist peacefully. Crane’s earlier sensibilities were attributed to the influence of his friendship with Alexander Wyant.
