This work is an elegant example of Smith’s self-taught mastery of the watercolor medium, as well as his love for plein-air painting in a city he knew intimately. In a palette of browns and blues, Smith presents a study of texture—having fun, it seems, differentiating between the glassy water, the bricks, the woven baskets, and limp cloths. He uses the absolutely still water’s surface as a mirror to reflect and reinforce these textural differences, created with varying thickness and pressure of the pencil lines, watercolor brushstrokes, and washes. With his interconnected forms and cohesive color palette, Smith unifies these potentially disparate patterns. It is an exercise in his technical ability; one in which he proves himself to be highly skilled, but it is also a finished, beautiful rendering of a peaceful scene in Venice.
