Linson depicted coastlines of faraway places like Argolis in Greece, and the Gulf of Mannar off of Sri Lanka, but Sea Symphony is most certainly a more tangible image of the swirling, powerful coastal waters of the Northeast. He spent summers in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where the pictorial potential of the sea never failed to inspire visitors. His decorative illustrative style comes across in strong patterns; here the rhythmic crash of white water against the rocky coast is evoked splendidly with his bold, mesmerizing brushstrokes. While Linson’s other bay paintings convey a more standard approach, this work shows remarkable energy and reflects the artist’s interest in dramatic narrative.
