Sword was trained by the landscapist George W. Nicholson in the early 1860s, and his resultant enthusiasm for the genre took him to numerous Northeastern coastal destinations in search of an inspiring view. This painting depicts a peaceful coastal scene at dusk, with a typical East coast panorama of rocky outcroppings overlooking a deep blue ocean. What scant clouds there are reflect the warm light from the setting sun, which serves to create a dramatic silhouette of the man standing on the dark promontory. His stylistic realism suits the simplicity and starkness of the view.
