Going to School is a beautiful, completed study for a larger painting: Breezy Day (1876) which is currently in an important private collection. Like Winslow Homer, Brown occasionally rendered his figures in shade in order to frame them with light. In this example, the young school girl is silhouetted by an idyllic blue sky. Brown was enormously famous for his paintings of children, and though some can be overly sentimental, this work has the straight-forward charm that was at the heart of Brown’s successful style.
