Along the Coast is an excellent example of Bricher’s Luminist style and his best work. It employs his signature broad horizontal format, and beautifully illustrates his ability to capture the light and atmosphere of his subject. Inspired by the masters John Kensett, Fitz Hugh Lane, Martin Heade, and Sanford Gifford, Bricher uses a similar approach to painting coastal scenes with precise detail and crisp, clear light. The glassy water, asymmetrically-weighted composition, and sense of silence and serenity all identify this work as a Luminist painting. The artist’s style progressed over his lifetime, moving towards a more expressive manner, but his works retain traces of his Luminist roots throughout. Along the Coast also retains its original 6 ¾ inch wide gilt frame, a classic presentation for a Bricher of this caliber.
