Wiggins was reputed to have begun painting snowscapes while he was in his studio, trying—unsuccessfully—to finish a summer landscape during a blizzard. Whatever the circumstances were, he happened upon a subject that brought him significant popularity with critics and patrons alike. In Midtown Storm, the scene presented is a cheerful one: bright flags flying and clusters of bundled-up pedestrians enlivening the snow-covered city block. The vanishing point leads the eye towards the elegant spires in the distance, and the crisp lines of the building facades are softened in the swirling snow. This is an exemplary work, which demonstrates the expert hand of the master American Impressionist in each vigorous brushstroke.
