In the 1880’s and 1890’s Palmer traveled extensively, studying and painting in Italy and in France. It was during these trips that his work began to show the influence of the Impressionists. He began to focus on color and the way that light reflected off of water, and mastered his talent for capturing the soft Venetian light. Venetian Reflections, is a supreme example of Palmers Venetian works of art which were viewed favorably by New York critics and praised for their  magnifying and magical light.
