With dark crags against light sands, busy sailing vessels in calm waters, and storm clouds beneath blue sky, Drew’s painting celebrates the inherent contrasts in the New England coastline. Each rock, tree, and ship is carefully placed to create a harmonious pattern for the eye to trace across in a meditative fashion that echoes the morning’s peace. This union of artistic and experiential serenity is a major part of the Luminist style of Fitz Hugh Lane or John Kensett, though Drew’s work differs in that he applies paint more expressively so as to give texture to selected natural elements. This is one of his later works, and it reflects decades of cumulative observation and appreciation of the Eastern coastline.
