A Quiet Cove is a stunning example of de Haas’ favorite subject and his best work. Taking on the tradition of the great Luminist painters of the time, such as Alfred Thompson Bricher and William Trost Richards, de Haas uses the light’s reflection on the glassy surface of the water to infuse the composition with a clear and sharp, yet serene atmosphere. The potential drama with the sailboats beneath the distant storm clouds is belied by this overwhelming sense of calm which, as with the best Luminist works, guides the viewer to more philosophical musings.
