The artist maintained an unflagging interest in figural painting, and capturing the human landscape. In works like Coney Island, the composition is based on the placement of the beach goers, who form a pattern of black, red, and white on the shore line. Walter delighted in painting beach scenes in New York and Massachusetts, and Coney Island provided an ideal subject for her with its bright colors and masses of frolicking children. Her loose rendering of form gives the work an abstract quality, and the quick brushstrokes reinforce the sense of fun and vitality.
