Lawless was interested in discovering and depicting patterns in landscapes: patterns created both by form and by the contrast of light and shadow. In our work, Snappy Weather, he explores one of his favorite themes—the snowscape, wherein each element exhibits its own pattern, from the heavier, more deliberate brushstrokes in the snow to the quick daubs of orange in the remaining foliage. There is a pleasing combination of blues, purples, and oranges breaking up the mounds of white. Both the colors and the engaging designs breathe life into the winter view. The overall scene is a happy one; one which reveals Lawless’ love for the landscapes of his Connecticut home.
