Our painting, Near Bernardsville, New Jersey, is a beautiful example of his sensitivity towards his subject matter and technical virtuosity. Whittredge brilliantly depicts a summer day in the bucolic countryside, capturing with his fine brushstrokes the lush greenery, wild flowers and natural beauty of the moment. The artist’s extensive training is revealed, but so is his personal relationship with the world around him. Here we see the landscape that is familiar and beloved to Whittredge, and it is handled with more intimacy and care than his tourist impressions of Western panoramas.
