In “Saturday Night”, 1930, we see Shinn’s ability to capture the lively energy and romance of a fashionable Country Club dinner dance. The picture tells a story, with carefully chosen placement of the figures, portraying the drama and magic of the evening. Viewers are treated to at least three different vignettes within the composition from the stylish couple on the left engaged in their own moment, to the group of guests conversing at the table in the middle to the couple gazing out beyond the railing on the right. The attention to detail, magical lighting and accurate perspective all contribute to the success of this classic example by this important artist.
