Red Bay, Labrador shows William Bradford’s interest in the dramatic scenery of the Canadian and Arctic coastlines. This is a study of elemental motion: the dark, choppy sea and the expanding grey clouds, in which human presence is only vaguely suggested with the four small boats on the horizon. Bradford emphasizes the sense of movement in the waves and wind with quick, energetic brushstrokes. The feeling of cold is palpable, and it is wonderful to imagine Bradford painting this in the blustering wind—only the beginning of his trek north to colder, windier climes.
