Porfirio Salinas became one of Texas’ most celebrated landscape painters, known particularly for his impressionist renderings of the beloved state flower: the bluebonnet. Here is a sweet view of a field of bluebonnets at dusk. The scene is quiet and windless, the few tufts of cloud catching the last pink rays of sunlight; the rich blue flowers create a carpet that stretches into the purple mountains in the background. Salinas delineates the bluebonnets in the foreground with individual daubs of blue and white, then blends the blue with grey to streak the receding turf. It is a simple but beautiful view, and it is no surprise that Salinas was treasured for his bluebonnet paintings.
