Few artists were able to paint the sea and beach as well as William Trost Richards. The artist was adept at painting light coming through the waves, the foam created when they hit the shoreline, and the reflective qualities surrounding them. Sunrise best demonstrates how Richards captures the charm of solitude and the breadth of the sea. Although Richards was a noted landscape painter, he is best remembered for his incandescent shorelines.
