"Dinner Sur le Toit" , ca. 1900
Oil on canvas

Hoffbauer was inspired by photographs of New York at night and began studying and painting fashionable social events on rooftops in New York. The presented piece is an exquisite study for his most famous work, Diner Sur Le Toit, a nine foot painting now residing in the National Gallery of New South Wales, in Sydney, Australia. It is a prime example of how Hoffbauer used impressionist techniques to present a group of fashionable people dining on a terrace overlooking the light-riddled New York night. The flowing dresses and fanciful hats echo the cigar smoke and brightly shined silver of the table while spotlights peek from the busy New York skyline.
