It was during his time on Monhegan Island that Ebert best expressed and utilized his highly developed formal skills. Our picture, Monhegan, is one of the finest examples of his style: he used his characteristically bright palette and confident brushstrokes to elevate a simple seaside vista into something much grander. The swirling patterns of color and patches of thick impasto make the painting seem alive, so that one’s eye is never quite finished exploring the canvas.
